From Help To Healing

How I Went from "Help!" to Healing: The Short Version

I often get asked how to start the Keto/Carnivore way of eating, as I’ve been on a journey to reclaim my health through “diet.” I hesitate to use the word "diet" to describe how I eat now because I knew this had to become a way of life.

I’ve tried many trends—vegan, raw vegan, fruitarian, vegetarian, pescatarian, paleo, Whole30, and so on. Unfortunately, the first three left me in the worst health of my life, especially in terms of diabetes “management.” I ended up on five medications, with an ever-increasing A1C, weight gain, and frequent yeast infections, both vaginal and on my skin. These infections would flare up monthly, sometimes weekly.

At the point of desperation, I cried out to the Lord for help: “I can’t keep living this way. I know you didn’t make me to be sick or need lifelong medication. Please guide me.”

In my mid-to-late 20s, I was depressed, experiencing night sweats, hot flashes, and mood swings (which were intense). I felt like I was living in the body of someone 30 to 40 years older. My menstrual cycle was irregular—sometimes I’d go months without it, and when it came, it would last for weeks. I was only having four to five cycles a year, yet my husband and I really wanted children.

"Help!" is a prayer I should have prayed from the start. I had been following conventional wisdom and believed I was on the right path, but I needed God’s wisdom. I didn’t understand (yet!) how diabetes affects the body or that my attempts to heal through diet were actually harming me. My body had been trying to tell me all along.

Many people think we’re supposed to fall apart as we age, but I had the “privilege” of falling apart in my 20s. I realized this was not how it was supposed to be. While reading through the Bible one year, I was struck by the phrase "and then he died" in Genesis 5, where it’s repeated eight times. I believe the Holy Spirit was pointing out something profound: we are meant to simply “and then he died.”

Now, I’m not saying that people back then didn’t die from sickness or disease, but I believe the Holy Spirit was highlighting that a peaceful, natural death is part of our inheritance. There’s so much more I could share from my journey, but I’m saving that for another time (I’m working on the full story).

For now, I’d like to offer some resources that have helped me start and maintain, though imperfectly, what is now my way of life—the Ketogenic/Carnivore way of eating. I have no one but God to thank for guiding me.

  • Carnivore Cure by Judy Cho is a comprehensive guide to the carnivore diet, which focuses on eating only animal-based foods for health and healing. The book explores how an all-meat diet can address various health issues, including autoimmune conditions, digestive problems, and chronic inflammation.

Key Points from the Book:

  • Healing Through Simplicity: Cho explains how eliminating plant-based foods, especially those with anti-nutrients (like lectins and oxalates), can help the body heal by reducing inflammation and gut irritation. She emphasizes the nutrient density of animal products and how they can provide all the essential nutrients humans need.

    1. Bio-Individuality: One of the book's core messages is that there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to diet. Cho encourages readers to adjust their carnivore diet according to their specific health needs and goals, exploring different approaches like including or excluding dairy, organ meats, or eggs.

    2. Gut Health and Mental Wellness: Cho links the carnivore diet to improvements in gut health, which she argues is the foundation for overall well-being, including mental health. She discusses how certain plant compounds can harm gut integrity and how animal foods can help restore it.

    3. Debunking Myths: The book challenges many common nutritional myths, such as the need for dietary fiber and the dangers of cholesterol and saturated fat. Cho presents scientific evidence to show how an animal-based diet can be more beneficial than a typical balanced diet.

    4. Step-by-Step Guide: For those interested in trying the carnivore diet, Carnivore Cure provides a practical, step-by-step approach to transitioning, with advice on troubleshooting issues like cravings, nutrient imbalances, and how to manage social situations while eating this way.

The book also includes personal stories of healing and scientific references to support the health benefits of a carnivore diet. Cho presents the carnivore diet as an elimination diet that helps reset the body, allowing people to discover which foods are truly beneficial or harmful for them.
